Prosigns (Procedural Signals)
9 signalsProsigns are two-letter control codes used in amateur radio to signal formatting and flow during a contact. The two letters are sent as one continuous character with a 1-dot intra-character gap between them (instead of the usual 3-dot inter-letter gap), which is why they are written inside angle brackets like <SK> to distinguish them from the literal letters S and K.
Tip: in the translator, type any prosign using angle brackets, for example <SK>, <AR>, or <BT>, and it will be encoded and played with the correct 1-dot intra-character gap. When decoding Morse back to text, unique prosign codes are rendered as the matching <XX> badge.
What is International Morse Code?
International Morse Code (sometimes called Continental Morse Code) is the globally standardized encoding of letters, numerals, and punctuation as sequences of short (“dots” or dits) and long (“dashes” or dahs) signals. It was codified in 1865 at the International Telegraph Convention in Paris (where the International Telegraph Union, now the ITU, was founded) and is now formalized by the ITU-R M.1677 recommendation. Unlike the older American Morse Code developed by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail, the international variant uses no internal pauses inside a letter and only two signal lengths, which made it far easier to learn and reliable to transmit over long-distance radiotelegraph circuits.
The code survived the obsolescence of the telegraph because it is remarkably resilient: a single on/off signal (a flashlight, a tapped wall, a radio carrier, even a blinking eye) is enough to carry meaningful text. For more than a century it was the backbone of maritime distress communication, and the famous SOS signal (... --- ...) remains internationally recognized. Even though the International Maritime Organization officially retired Morse for commercial shipping distress in 1999, the code is still used today by amateur radio operators, accessibility tools, pilots, and makers of hidden-message jewellery and tattoos.
Practically speaking, every character is a sequence of dots and dashes with a one-dot pause between symbols, a three-dot pause between letters, and a seven-dot pause between words. Words are usually separated with a forward slash (/) when written down. Read on for the timing rules that hold the whole system together.
Timing Rules: Dots, Dashes & the PARIS Standard
Morse code timing is built around one fundamental unit: the length of a single dot. Every other duration is derived from it, which is what makes the code unambiguous even at high speeds. Speed is measured in words per minute (WPM) using the reference word PARIS, which contains exactly 50 dot-units.
The basic unit; everything else is a multiple of this.
Exactly three times the length of a dot.
Silence between dots and dashes inside a single letter.
Silence between letters in the same word.
Silence between words; rendered as a slash on paper.
Reference word; 1 WPM = 50 dot-units per minute.
How to calculate the dot length
At a given speed in WPM, the duration of one dot in seconds is:
dot_duration (seconds) = 1.2 / WPM Example at 20 WPM: dot = 1.2 / 20 = 0.060 s (60 ms) dash = 3 × 60 = 0.180 s (180 ms) letter gap = 3 × 60 = 0.180 s word gap = 7 × 60 = 0.420 s
